The Czech Republic
The Czech Republic has much to offer to tourists from all around the world. Well-preserved old towns, medieval castles, chateaux and historical spa resorts await you...
The Czech Republic is the most western situated Slavic land in Europe. Breaking a nearly 75-year union with the Slovak Republic in 1993, it is relatively a young country. This independent country, situated in Central Europe, consists of the historical regions of Bohemia and Moravia - once part of the Great Moravian Empire formed by Slav tribes in the early 9th century.
Located at the crossroads of various cultures, the Czech Republic has countless cultural and historical points of interest. Prague, the capital of the country, is one of the world's most beautiful and cultured cities, and most exciting with dynamic music and arts scene. This magical city of bridges, cathedrals, gold-tipped towers and church domes, whose image has been mirrored in the surface of the Vltava River for more than ten centuries, is like a magnet for foreign tourists.
Český Krumlov, the country's second busiest tourist town after Prague, is a lively, cosmopolitan town with a unique atmosphere surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Apart numerous historic heritage sites, one can also find here attractive exhibits of world-renown artists, enjoy concerts and theatre performances.
Most other cities in the country attract significant numbers of tourists, but the spa towns, such as Karlovy Vary, Marianske Lazne and Frantiskovy Lazne are particularly popular holiday destinations.
The Czech Republic is the land of hundreds of castles, chateaux, and ruined fortresses, all a nostalgic reminder of the nation's rich cultural past. Karlštejn Castle, Český Krumlov and Lednice-Valtice are the most impressive castles of the country.
The Czech countryside offers a pleasant combination of mountains, water, meadows and forests. Enjoy the extraordinary diversity of the landscape with characteristic sandstone rock towns, fauna and flora in the area of Český ráj, or discover fascinating natural phenomena, deep forests, peaceful valleys, mountain meadows and torrents, melancholy lakes, moors and peat bogs in the large forested mountain area of Šumava, which extends along the southwest border of the Czech Republic with Germany and Austria. The mountains and hills of Šumava offer ideal conditions for hiking and cycling in summer and for skiing in winter.
The country is also famous for Czech beer. Originated in western Bohemian city of Plzeň, the Pilsener style beer is the most well-known beer in the world.
